Larimar was originally discovered by Miguel Mendez, but it was rediscovered by a Peace Corps member known as Norman Rilling. It was first named Travelina, before being renamed after Mendez's daughter Larissa, mixed with the Spanish word for sea. It was initially thought that Larimar originated from the sea, but it comes from the depths of the Barahona mountains.
