Larimar was originally discovered by Miguel Mendez, but was rediscovered by a member of the Peace Corps known as Normal Rilling. It was first named Travelina before being renamed after Mendez's daughter Larissa, which was mixed with the Spanish word for the sea. At first it was thought that Larimar originated from the sea, but it came from the depths of the Barahone Mountains.
The meaning of Larimar is clear communication and inner wisdom. Larimar is actually born of heat and fire, as it comes from the volcanic eruptions of the Dominican Republic.
